Media Summary Report

Exodus to Shanghai Moscow International Film Festival

01/07/2016

The final and rather resonant chord sounded Romanian-English “Exodus in Shanghai” (section “Russian trace”), wild Kungfu-Action Anthony Hickox, known for his genre hits of the late 80’s / early 90’s (two of the “Wax Museum” “Hellraiser 3”). In the center of the plot – the flight of the Jews from Vienna 38th year in Shanghai by the Chinese Embassy. A fighter like Bruce Lee, a charming blonde, stupid SS as if from a movie of the “TEL”, bloody fight scenes and firefights, the swastika of cocaine tracks, not that I seriously played by actor and constant shouts of “Heil Hitler!” In half with jokes about the Führer reminiscent at once of “Mamma Mia”, “Inglourious Basterds” and “Schindler’s List.” By the way, Hickox, which appears in the final as an agent of Fleming in the closing credits thanks Steven Spielberg. Yes, it can, treshovo and absurd, but it is perfect as a necessary antidote to the overly serious festival pictures. The festival has brought other pleasant discoveries – in particular, the Argentine-French film “Eva does not sleep” with Gael Garcia Bernal and Denis Laban, but more on that next time.

FILMFESTIVAL.COM – Exodus to Shanghai, 2015 review by Claus Mueller

20/02/2016

Produced by Michel Adam a fashion TV founder and directed by Anthony Hickox (Waxwork, Hellraiser3…) this upbeat feature film provides a superb symbiosis of action thriller, comedy, romance, adventure, music and high production value. Using most attractive fashion models and seasoned actors the Exodus story is largely based on the true story of Dr. Feng Shan Ho the Chinese Consul of Vienna issuing 10, 000 exit visas in 1938 to Austrian Jews to leave the Third Reich for Shanghai, an initiative opposed by his Berlin superior who needed arms from Germany. The narrative involves Dr. Ho, Fannia a beautiful musician falling in love with Bruce the martial arts expert nephew of the Consul, the art gallery owners Morgenstern, sadistic Gestapo and SS members who were ordered by Hitler to find his drawing of Prince, his favorite shepard dog, and an assortment of other original characters. Following the maxim that only a good Nazi is a dead Nazi Dr. Ho’s group and people he had hidden successfully escape on a train from Vienna after killing a large number of Nazis. The film is most enjoyable and appealing in part because of its message that the good side prevails over evil. Before its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and theatrical release it is already streaming on Amazon com …

FILMFESTIVAL.COM – Exodus to Shanghai: this movie has it all

19.02.2016
History, on-a-loop, has shown that it is just not only an ontological possibility but a historical reality.

Which is why we root for the underdogs, the davids, the oppressed.

Which is why we like movies like Schindler’s List or movies like Exodus to Shanghai.

Based on a true story of Dr. Feng Shan Ho the Chinese Consul of Vienna. Dr. Ho, sometimes refered to as the Chinese Schindler, is even opposed by his own superior in Berlin who needs help from Germany. Probably thereason whey the Chinese kept this story hidden for a long time since they did not looks so good in it… READ MORE

FILMFESTIVAL.COM – Exodus to Shanghai: This film flies but is also true UFO

19.02.2016
When I was about to watch that movie, I was like « another movie about the WW2, well I hope I won’t fall asleep until the end… ». Actually I was wrong; I was awake during all the hour and I had quite a good time. Exodus to Shanghai is actually the type of movie that catches your attention in the beginning (just because you want to see how it’ll succeed the challenge). I think if Tarantino was obligated to realize a remake of Inglorious Bastard with Ryan Murphy: the result wouldn’t have been far from this movie.

The plot is based on a real events which very few know. However the tone is more relaxed than most mainstream movie about WW2. And the result is quite enjoyable: you’ll laugh when you need to, and you won’t cry because it’s not the aim of this movie to make you cry… READ MORE

FILMFESTIVALS.COM – Strong ensemble performances Exodus to Shanghai fuses surrealism with parody

13.02.2016

Yes, Adolf Hitler, claimed to be a painter. And he produced hundreds of works and sold his paintings and postcards to try to earn a living during his Vienna years (1908–13). However, he was not successful.

In his autobiography Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler described how, in his youth, he wanted to become a professional artist, but his aspirations were ruined because he failed the entrance exam of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Hitler was rejected twice by the institute, once in 1907 and again in 1908. In his first examination, he had passed the preliminary portion; which was to draw two of the assigned iconic or biblical scenes, in two sessions of three hours each. The second portion was to provide a previously prepared portfolio for the examiners. It was noted that Hitler’s works contained “too few heads”. The institute considered that he had more talent in architecture than in painting. One of the instructors, sympathetic to his situation and believing he had some talent, suggested that he apply to the academy’s School of Architecture. However, that would have required returning to secondary school from which he had dropped out and which he was unwilling to do… READ MORE

———————————————–

The premiere screening of Exodus to Shanghai on the 21NOV was a great success, with more than 300 professionals, Jewish and Chinese interest groups, and fans overwhelmed and thrilled with the adventure/love story. From the first scene onwards viewers were captivated, cheering as the Nazis were beaten up, laughing at the comedy and crying with the avengers.
